It is an old PR tactic that is used by marketing pros and savvy entrepreneurs from time to time. Finding a hot topic that is gaining large interest and linking it to your business. Some call it “pop marketing,” some call it “linketing.” Whatever title you give it, if done properly – it works.
We had a client ask us a few months ago for some PR tips last week. We asked her what hot news story would link to her business. She replied, “I want to link to Susan Boyle and her huge attention.” Susan Boyle obviously landed a lot of press and community interest – with over 15 Million hits in 24 hours on YouTube. Finding a link between this rising star and my client’s business wasn’t easy, but we did some research and found a small link. The result, a lot of local attention to the client’s business.
